Wedding planning can be really stressful (as well as the most joyful time of your life obvs) but your cake design appointment is surely one of the most fun aspects.
Sitting down, cappuccino in hand, tasting four different flavours of cake or macarons, and chatting about your beautiful cake design with one of our experts definitely beats buying wedding insurance or proof reading your name cards.
We want you to have a great time at your wedding cake consultation, but we also want it to tick all those boxes that make for a smooth wedding day. So we thought it would be useful to write down some tips that help you, and us as a supplier, make the most of this opportunity - after all, it's likely the only time we'll meet you in person.
1) Timeline of the Day
We don't need to know minute by minute plans, but having a good idea of the layout of your day really helps. Buttercream cakes can't be left out for hours, and we need to schedule our set ups carefully and often co-ordinate with other cake setups on the same day. So knowing whether we are setting up in the room turnaround at 2pm, or in the morning at 11am, is really helpful.
2) Bring mood boards / colour schemes
Being able to see the styling inspiration for your wedding really helps us when planning. Colour is fundamental to anything creative and we love our cakes to tie in really well with your day so your photos look AMAZING. On your phone is fine!
3) Look at some cakes beforehand!
This might sound obvious, but sometimes people come in completely cold having no idea what they like the look of. It's especially a good idea to look through our own gallery to see what cakes we've previously made that you love. The good thing about Three Little Birds is that between us we are skilled in fondant, buttercream, and semi-naked and naked cakes, so you have a wide range of options! 4) Book your florist beforehand and have their contact details to hand
Wedding cake designers work closely with florists. If you choose fresh flowers for your cake, you'll likely order them from your florist and then we will make sure we arrive after them at the venue and dress the cake with them.
If you choose buttercream or sugar flowers, we'll still need to liaise with your florist to match types and colours of flowers. It's really helpful if you've already booked them and got their details to hand so we can make a note and work with them. If you have pictures of your inspiration bouquets, even better!
Obviously, don't worry if you can't do all this before your wedding cake consultation. We can still leave a few boxes as 'TBC' and then confirm them with you nearer the time.
But the more we can get in place in advance, the better. It means things are less likely to be forgotten and the whole process will flow more smoothly. We won't have to bother you in the weeks and days before the wedding to find details out that weren't already in place. And we'll be able to advise you much better about what kind of cake designs and flavours would work well with your day! Because the beauty of a bespoke cake is that it reflects you and your wedding, and no one else.
